I know Scotty recommends the best way to replace a transmission is to get a manufacturer remanufactured transmission, not to have a knucklehead rebuild it for you.
But when it comes to the new Honda Civics these days, these CVTs aren't rebuildable, and Honda doesn't seem to offer replacements either. All the parts sites show all CVTs for all years as "discontinued".
Where is a guy supposed to find a replacement CVT transmission when it goes out? Is the entire car junk at that point? Even Kia provides transmissions 10 years back for their models. But not Honda? I'm really surprised.
Is your Honda’s CVT broken?
Not yet, but it will be one day. Much like Scotty, I like to keep my car running without running to the dealership for a new one every time it breaks. If they don't make parts available, how can we fix our cars?
If no other way it would have to be junkyard parts. (Cue picture of Chevy or Fiat dealership.) In the case of a transmission you'd look for a low-mileage one from a car totalled in an accident. Using junkyard parts is a common thing for those of us driving very old cars that many new parts aren't made for any more.
You’ll have to call up the Honda dealer with your VIN and find out.
Usually, once a Honda’s transmission goes it, the general value of the vehicle is lower than the cost of a new/remanufactured transmission. So it just makes sense to replace the vehicle, instead.
With that said, they do last a really long time if you follow good maintenance practices & baby your transmission, especially in a Civic.
I would cross that bridge when I get to it.
For now, just enjoy your Civic!
