Scotty,

Have a 2013 Kia Soul 1.6L engine with 130K miles. Vehicle died 3 hours into a trip traveling 60mph. No clanking, banging or other noticeable noises. Vehicle Dealer says engine needs replaced but did not give a reason why. They said waste of time and money to tear it down and see the exact problem. Brought it home and I ran a dry compression test. 30lbs cylinder 1 0lbs 0n 2-4. Contacted Kia and they said there was an internal program due to PCM causing undue stress on the rod bearings causing engine failure of the 1.6. The first rep initially told us they did not see us as the owner of the vehicle and the vehicle missed the deadline to have the software update completed and warranty extended to cover the issue. They verified our purchase date and said that we had the car when the notification went out but since we were not known owners we should be covered because we were not notified. Then they changed their story and said they send the notifications out through the DMV and since the date passed there is nothing they can do. They also said the dealer thought the car been submerged because there was liquid in one or more cylinders. The liquid was coolant I also seen it. Any advice you can give on dealing with Kia? If not maybe you can at least let others know this is known issue with the Kia 1.6L.

It's because of things like this that we try to warn people not to buy Hyundai/Kia products. (Yes, any car manufacturer can build lemons but unfortunately the Korean manufacturers have way more than their fair share.)

Unfortunately as has been mentioned about all you can do is get a lawyer, though small claims court might be another option.
