[Solved] Normal engine oil consumption as taken from a Toyota owner's manual

I am reading an owner's manual for Toyota Yaris 2007 Engine 1NZ-FE. It says that it is normal if the engine consumes some oil, and that max normal oil consumption is 1.1 qt. per 600 miles! At that, the oil capacity with filter is 3.9 qt. So, the engine may consume 28% of the max oil capacity within 600 miles. And Toyota thinks this is normal. Are they crazy?

The NZ-series are very cheap engines. They were used also on Chinese budget cars like GEELY and GreatWall.

A lot of these engines ended up exceeding “1L per 1,000KM” as early as 60k miles (depending on how you treat your car)

The only good small engine Toyota sold in Europe (in the US they had plenty of amazing engines) at that time was the ZR-FE series (I wouldn’t recommend the ZR-FAE cause those had the ValveMatic system)

I wish I knew that before buying a car with 1NZ engine. I hope my Yaris will not burn so much oil, but I'm definitely concerned that Toyota defines 1.1 qt. consumed per 600 miles as normal. As if they want to justify themselves when you come to them asking to fix the oil burning problems, and they say "Ah, that's normal. Nothing to worry about."

Change your oil frequently (7.5k km) and don’t do too many hard accelerations - if you maintain it well it can easily last you more then 200,000km.

The Toyota NZ is way better then THP and EB2 so don’t feel sorry.
This car is better then average, just pay attention to the oil level and to take good care of the engine. 🙂

Thanks for the tips!

Using 1 quart of oil per 600 miles is ridiculous and completely unacceptable.

As ridiculous as it is, friends in Russia say it’s quite typical for a Lada 1.8L.
Here’s a video of a Lada Vesta with only 7.5K miles that has already reached that level of consumption.

(You probably can use auto generated subtitles)

He also explains what affects oil consumption from a design standpoint while he is rebuilding this one.

I always thought Toyota makes great cars regardless of the market but it seems I was wrong.

The best Toyota cars are in Asia, cars like the Toyota innova and Toyota fortuner.

That is definitely not normal. Burning 1.1 Qt. of oil every 600 miles is worse than what I have seen in BMWs with those N63 twin-turbo V8 engines, and Toyota claims that it's "normal". I would definitely take it to some professional mechanic who knows what he is doing and see what the issue is behind it and if it needs serious expensive repairs, I would just get rid of it, that gen Yaris is not very well made, to begin with (My dad rented one (2008) in Toronto when he had no car at the time and he hated it). Other options you could do is trying a used low mileage engine from a junkyard, or just sell it as a parts car or as a whole and pray some fool buys it, then ur better off buying a Corolla which is a much better car than the Yaris.

Yeah the Yaris is terrible, the only small cars that drive well and don’t fall apart are old Daihatsu products and the new Mazda2.

Thanks. I hope my engine on Yaris 2007 stays good for at least 2 years. Despite what is written in the owner's manual.
