Oil Consumption In my Toyota Rav4 1996

Hellow Mr Scotty,

I have toyota Rav4 L 1996 3s Fe 2L engine. I had done fully engine overhaul due to failing of connecting rod. After the overhaul my oil consuption is pretty high. I did change the oil after the overhaul 1000km and after 5000km. On this i put nearly excess of 4L of Oil. Im using 15W-40. I watched for any leaks there isnt. Change 3 PCV valves. and lately i've done compression test on my engine and it also normal. there are no any kind of smoke, misfires or any kind of symptoms of oil burning and engine nearly run 180000km and after overhaul 7000km only. can you please help me to find any kind of solution for this. Im tired of having this problem.

Well the issue you had with the connecting rod is pretty typical for this engine - usually they punch through the engine block.

 

I’d use the oem spec 5W-30/5W-40 (check your manual for the correct spec) and would not use heavier oil.

Who has rebuilt it? On the 3S-FE there are plenty of issues with the piston rings - these should have been replaced, it’s a possibility they haven’t been installed right.

 

I hope the guys who rebuilt it also accounted for the other weak spots of this engine (replaced the belt, adjusted the valves, etc.)

 

Consumption of up to 1L/1000KM is “acceptable” according to the internet and more recent Toyota manuals - after that, I would advise replacement or rebuild. 

(unit conversion: 112,500 miles before the engine required this major overhaul)


@dan Mechanic told me to use the thicker oil because engine is old. all 4 pistons has new rings new head gasket new valve seals new timing belts. If there is a problem with piston rings why couldn’t i see any smoke in my tale pipe any compression loss in my engine. yeah it consumes nearly 1l for 1000km


Can i know what happens i use 15w-40 instead of 5w-30


If it’s loosing oil - Unless it’s leaking the oil, it’s burning it.
Either way, as I see it - the person who rebuilt it didn’t do a bad job.

If Moly piston rings were used in the rebuild, sometimes they take quite a while to seat in.  Or if the cylinders were not properly honed, that could be a problem.

If it's not leaking any oil as you said, and it is losing oil, it has to be burning it.  There are no other alternatives.  By the way, why would the mechanic recommend heavier oil because it's an"older engine" when the engine has been rebuilt?


@doc I dont know the reason for that but as he explained its getting less worn by using thicker oil as i use 15w 40 instead 5w-30 and engine has been rebuilt im last year may


is that burning is normal for now? and one thing a notice about oil consume is its using more oil im high way as an example its using more oil 100km in highway than 100km in normal roads

I think your mechanic is a little confused.  How he equates using thicker oil with less engine wear is pure fantasy.  Rebuilt engines generally use thinner oil (some require a special break in oil) for a period of time after the rebuild and then switch to the normal weight oil the engine was designed for.
