I have a 2018 Kia Forte with the 2.0L Nu mpi eninge, 42k miles, automatic.
A little back story I normally do the maintenance and part replacement on my vehicles myself, but work has been busy so I let my little brother change my oil. He forgot to fully tighten the oil drain plug, it was just finger tight. I didn't check it, I normally do even for myself, but this time I didn't and that was my fault but also he isn't a novice.
When I got on the highway today the plug finally came undone and lit the oil pressure which prompted me to shut off the engine since the oil was just changed sadly before I shut the engine off I did hear a mild clatter. I made it safely off the highway where I found the oil drain plug sitting right below the drain port on the underguards little access door. I replaced the drain plug and gasket, Oil Filter, and refilled the oil. The engine started fine, but there is a noticeable tick that wasn't there, after idling for a bit the tick quieted down but was still noticeable with the hood up. I gently got it home on it's own power, there was no hesitation or loss of power. Once home I checked the filter I removed on the side of the road and there was no metal in the oil or medium, and OBDII shows nothing out of the ordinary.
I'm kind of at a loss do I wait and see if the tick works itself out or do I go the warranty route if kia will even cover the warranty with how the damage occurred?
Input on my course of action would be greatly appreciated.
Make sure you clean up the mess well, if you plan to claim warranty.
Also, how long do you reckon you drove with low oil pressure? A few seconds shouldn’t have done fatal damage, however, this is Hyundai/Kia we are talking about.
If I was in your shoes, I’d take it in to the dealer for the noise & have them check it. Based on their diagnosis, you can then decide your next course of action.
Good luck!
I'm sure it's probably fine just to keep driving it. I could be wrong but i vaguely remember kia having issues with, I think their 2.0 engines. If I were you, I'd try to get the warrenty to cover any possible damage or whatever else. Best case scenario you get a brand new engine or car or refund or your engine rebuilt. Worst case, they say that they won't cover it. I'd say it's worth a try... just don't tell them what happened... just make it seem like the noise just happened out of the blue
