Starter Interrupter from Loan Shark??

Hi Scotty and friends,

My 2013 Toyota Corolla had issues where the car wouldn't start. Not even a click. The car would work temporarily by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery to reset the computer but only temporarily and would act up a few days later. Had it looked at by 2 trusted mechanics who checked everything in the system and all was good (battery, alternator, starter, ignition switch, etc). One thought it might be the anti-theft system but since my fob works just fine and hasn't had issues I didn't think that was it. The second was the Toyota dealer service shop and they said the anti-theft system worked just fine. The one thing they found that was fishy was an after market starter interrupter in the connection wiring of the starting system, so they took that off. Looked online and sometimes loan sharks and dealers financing to low credit buyers put them on to lock the car up if they are late on payments and has a GPS tracker to repo it if necessary (and probably sell location data too 😡). I bought this pre-owned from someone so they must've had it on from when they bought it. Have you ever heard of this and could that have been shorting out and causing my car not to start?

Thanks!

Buy here pay here lots always have those devices installed due to their high repo rate. They can definitely cause issues down the road. Now that it has been removed, you should be ok.

Some auto places do put those in the car so they can kill them if payment is not received.  Mostly shady places do it. If installed incorrectly I could definitely see it causing a problem.
