I drained transmission and got 154 oz (after measuring)! Book says only 3.5 quarts. How much to put back into transmission? Car was shifting fine but I don’t think transmission fluid has ever been changed. Drive it with 3.5Q added and add more if transmission doesn’t act right? 154oz is 4.8 quarts! I wonder if previous lender just added over time?
Put in the same amount that came out. Check fluid level, add more if needed.

Be sure to follow the manufacturer's procedure for checking fluid level. Assuming you have automatic trans with a dipstick it's usually checked with the engine idling in park or neutral at operating temperature. (Some dipsticks have markings for checking when cold as well.)
