Hey Scotty & Fellow Moderators, I have an issue with my 2011 Nissan Frontier 4x4 SV 5spd w/od with 147K miles. Everytime, I start it, and the engine is cold. Once I drive the first time out of my driveway, each and every day. The first time it shifts into second gear it makes this noise shown in the video below (5.5sec clip)

Any of y’all have any clue what this might be. It ONLY happens right when the engine is cold and transmission is cold. Then when I start driving it. It goes away completely and doesn’t come back. It ONLY occurs when it hasn’t been cranked for awhile and has been cold. It’s just from first to second when it makes that clunk noise. In future reference, Thank you!

I would make sure the trans fluid is red not pink and check the coolant to eliminate an intermix with coolant concern. Shouldn’t only happen cold but double check your u joints in the front and rear driveshafts

Let me guess, the trusted mechanic who checked it out was a buddy of your General Manager buddy.  Tell your General Manager buddy to show you the service records on the car.

Nope, it was a mechanic my family had gone too for 3 generations. He has always served us well, and mainly I do my own service on my truck(s) because I have trust issues like you must have as well.

So why didn't this trusted mechanic find the problem?

Because it only happens first in the morning when it’s cold. It doesn’t do any of that when it’s warmed up.

At 147K miles, the trans fluid and filter should have been changed three times.  Has it?

According to my knowledge it has from the previous owner. I checked the trans fluid and it’s pink as could be. So someone recently changed it. I bought it with 144K miles.

It’s just weird cause it only happens when the engine and trans fluid is cold. But It only happens once. It doesn’t keep continuing after the first time even when I stop and it’s still cold. It only happens one time

You were sold a ticking transmission bomb. As @Doc alluded to, your mistake was taking the sellers word.

I've never met anyone honest about what they were selling, be it a car or a used camera. I'm an honest guy but if me eating/paying rent depends on selling something that may not be so great...I'm playing dumb about the bad & talking up the "good points".

Excellent points.

I probably should upgrade those points next time from "runs good" to "dude, it moves....watch your foot on the gas."😄

I'm trying to get my buddy back on the road by giving him my old F150, not charging a dime, just said it runs, drives & any parts are gonna cost less than what you would pay for anything. Biggest thing is the exhaust manifold & a new one is in the backseat.

I don't want to put lipstick on a pig but "it's FREE & you waste atleast $20/day on rides" doesn't seem to compute😄 If I were him & crashing on couches after losing my house, I'd jump at it.

Did the previous owner produce receipts showing when and where the work was done?

No sir, i bought it from a dealership from a buddy I know who is the General Manager there. I asked him how the previous owner took care of it. He said according to the service reports they were getting he said it has been well taken care of.

If you believe that then I have some ocean front property in Arizona for you.  Dealership General Managers would sell you their Mother for a dollar, buddy or not.  NOT!

Yeah I don’t follow the service records. I inspected the truck myself and had a trusted mechanic look at it. We all thought it checked out great. It doesn’t burn oil, it shifts like a dream. It’s performance is nearly 100% ideal. It’s just that one issue. The clunk whenever I first start it up, going into second gear the first time.
