| RE: Replace thermostat along with coolant? | 24Relevance | 3 years ago | Kaizen | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| With the water pump and timing belt, sometimes it makes sense to do it the water pump with the timing belt, other times it makes no sense to do it with the timing belt, and it depends on how much it costs and how much labor time it takes. If it cost a ton to do the timing belt, and the timing belt is attached to the water pump, might as well dk the water pump. If the timing belt job is cheap and or easy on the labor, then maybe delay the water pump. If the timing belt is not attached to the the water pump system at all, then it makes no sense to do it. | |||||

| 2014 435k 40k mile engine. I replaced vvt motor for the eccentric shaft to control the valves. in the process is smashed the upper timing guide not terribly, but the top piece of the guide like an arm that hold the chain on the guide. I say hold but it’s it’s got some space in between to prevent jumping broke. How critical is it that I replace this before starting it. I would assume the tensioner is still able to hold the chain when I start it and build up oil pressure. I have photos. email me at [personal information redacted] for the photos. Like I said th ... | |||||

| @timebelt-travis Always happy to help. That one 1.6 VVT-i (1ZR-FE) is one of the best engines out there, If it has low milage I'd choose it - they easy last 300,000km if you replace the oil frequently, don't do short drives and if it was made after 2010. Probably the best small engine Toyota has built so far, what there is to know about it is: it's built like a tank but isn't very powerful, timing chains and water pumps can begin to leak / cause noises - and they should be replaced in a timely manner. Truly a great little engine, just will sometimes it ... | |||||
| KIA Timing Belt/Chain | 24Relevance | 2 years ago | araspovic | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I own a 2010 KIA Ceed 1.4 liter 90 HP. I asked the dealer if I need to replace the timing belt/chain and they said never. I saw a parts dealer web site that recommends replacement at 150K km or 90K miles. Who should I believe? Does KIA want me to wait until it breaks and I need a new car or does the parts dealer want to make a profit on the belt/chain replacement kit? Many Thanks to anyone who can answer this. | |||||

| Hey Scotty, I replaced my 2013 explorer sport 3.5 ecoboost timing chain by a Ford dealership at exactly 100,112 miles. I currently have 180,000 miles on the suv and will I ever need to replace the chain again? Is the transmission in that vehicle any good and how long does it last on standard maintenance performed? Very little towing has been done with this car. | |||||

| 2010 Chevy colorado 2.9L Had a timing chain and tensioner replaced, by a Mac. Shop. 4,000 miles later. The tensioner is bad / became loose again. And they wont fix it again. What would cause this. I'm thinking they messed up. Or did not replace everything. Or maybe something else at fault. Should I find another shop to fix it or, junk the engine. When they fixed it, the truck ran perfectly. And when the issue started both times it was a slow, transition, over a 3 week span. like the tensioner was slowly moving away from chain. I do know ab ... | |||||
| Answer to: Ticking noise after Timing Chain Tensioner Replacement | 24Relevance | 4 years ago | Dan | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| ... you only replace the tensioner (DEFINITELY would not start it). As @Doc has said, the tensioner use oil pressure to push the chain, and as I understand it, as it's an old chain that's probably already a bit stretched the tensioner may not be able to tension it using only the spring. But I could be wrong, this is nothing more than a guess. | |||||
| Answer to: Ticking noise after Timing Chain Tensioner Replacement | 24Relevance | 4 years ago | Doc | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| When doing a timing chain, you are supposed to replace all the components in a kit, not just one part. At 200K miles, the chain is probably stretched beyond the capability of the tensioners and guides. It should have been changed at around 100-150K miles. | |||||

| At best you'll need to replace just the chain and set the cams and crank back to the correct timing. Sprockets could need replacing because you're throwing a heavy chain off of them as it comes off, possibly shearing teeth. At worst, it will send the pistons into the valves, in addition to trashing the sprockets and basically turn the engine into a piece of metal your neighborhood scrappers would love to get their hands on. | |||||

| Answer to: Kia/Hyundai timing belt to chain conversion | 24Relevance | 1 year ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Never heard of that. Unless Kia/Hyundai provides the kit and a dealer installs it I would expect the warranty to be void. It would be a huge job not only involving the sprockets and chains but chain guides and tensioners, as well as any accessories such as the water pump that might be driven from the timing belt. If those vehicles have timing belts (most have chains these days) the best thing to do really is just change the belt on schedule. There's a lot more to worry about with Kia/Hyundai vehicles than a timing belt: | |||||

| It depends on the engine design and how it's been maintained. Usually timing chains will make noise when they get loose. Some cars have a spec for tensioner extension that can be tested. I've run cars up to 400K miles without timing chain problems. However I'm not familiar with your engine. There have been some poorly-designed engines that wear out timing chains in as little as 25,000 miles. | |||||
