| Buying cheap but high mileage | 9Relevance | 3 years ago | YosemiteSam | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hello there first time on the forum. I am looking on craigslist for a privately owned 15 passenger van for a decent price. All i have seen if people selling them for outrageous numbers compared to what kbb says and what i would think mileage would be. However i have found a few that are in the price range they should be but super high miles like 300k. I am trying to find out if the body and inside is good would it be a waste of money or a good purchase thinking that i would eventually have to replace the engine at some point or is that just way too many mile ... | |||||

| Id do the work, yeah kbb might value the car at 5-6k, but what's it gonna cost to replace it? If you do that work, which isn't much more than regular maintenance, you can get alot more out of it. | |||||
| Answer to: Cost of a 2015 4 Runner? | 9Relevance | 3 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| You didn't state trim level, but at kbb.com they peg the dealer price of that vehicle in "Premium Sport Utility" trim at a high of $28,470 with a "fair purchase price" of $26,270. The highest trim level, "TRD Pro Sport Utility", dealer pricing is listed as a high of $33,272 and a "fair purchase price" of $30,519. In the end the price is determined by what the market will bear. | |||||

| I appreciate all the comments. I just don't want a new monthly payment and would get absolutely hosed trading/selling it with the busted trans. For what it's worth , kbb has the car valued at 9-12k. I figure get the most of it for a few more years and then trade it in. | |||||

| Fair to assume you have a smartphone? Then a tool you might find helpful is the Kelley Blue Book app. It will give you prices/values in your area. Just remember the kbb app is only a tool, a rough guide. You might find it helpful. | |||||

| Yeah just looking at the mileage and kbb value has it at $3-4k market range for sale by a dealer. Sort of afraid about the transmission on these too but it comes with a three month warranty. Think I will walk away from this because the price is kinda absurd when I think about it. | |||||

| Answer to: Should I buy this used car | 9Relevance | 3 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Sounds excessive, kbb.com prices are pretty inflated to begin with. However the used car market is still crazy so hard to say for sure if they're ripping you off. You could check for comparables in your area to get an idea. If you proceed be sure to use caution. Used car dealers typically sell auction cars with unknown histories. (As I said you can't trust Carfax, not everything is reported to them or is public record.) | |||||
| Answer to: Should I buy this used car | 9Relevance | 3 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| You didn't state the price but it's nearly 14 years old so don't overpay. (The kbb.com site lists that car with that mileage at around $7000 for private party sale, $9000 from a stealership.) Carfax is not a reliable indicator of anything aside from the possibility of confirming mileage. (Look for any reports showing higher mileage than the current odometer reading.) Before making a decision have a good mechanic give the car a thorough pre-purchase inspection. | |||||

| Avoid trade in if you can help it. As a private seller you'll get a lot more money. Just look at kbb trade in values vs private seller. | |||||

| Welcome new member. I am sorry to hear that. According to kbb, that's more than the van is worth. I would take it to an independent shop and get an estimate because it might be much lower than dealer estimate, but if they answer in the same general ball park, it's time to move on. | |||||

| the code indicates a communication problem which could just be a loose/damaged/corroded wire/connector. I get the impression your shop is the kind that throws parts at a problem rather than diagnosing. Either check it yourself or find another trustworthy mechanic. | |||||
| Answer to: Which vehicle should I sell | 9Relevance | 3 years ago | MountainManJoe | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| well if it's a financial matter I would sell the one that guzzles the most fuel ... the truck. Your Fusion is newer and has less miles on it anyway. The truck should fetch a good price. Reasearch kbb and your local listings to establish a good price relevant to your particular area and market. | |||||
| Answer to: Transmission | 9Relevance | 3 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| ... comes with a crazy high interest rate. The kbb.com site pegs the fair market price of a 2015 Sentra at about $6000. Between the remaining car loan and cost of the transmission you're looking at putting about $9700 into that $6000 car. Maybe find a shop that can install a low-miles used transmission with a warranty for less money, then sell the car off once it's running to minimize your losses? Hard to say, I don't know how much cheaper that would be. | |||||
| Should I Trade In? 2016 Jetta | 9Relevance | 3 years ago | HisDudeness | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Looking for advice! I have a 2016 VW Jetta 1.4 TSI, automatic transmission with 35,000 miles. I've heard VWs maintenance can be pretty costly, so wondering if I should trade it in for a more reliable car before it gets up in miles? I've had 3-4 recalls that have all been handled, but no issues otherwise. kbb says trade in is between $9k-$10k in current condition. I'm not really a car guy but wanting to be more responsible in my vehicle ownership for the future. Thanks! | |||||
