| I have recently read that the correct way to put a car in park is to engage the parking brake before putting the car in park, however, I have been parking for years by just putting the car in park, unless I park on the hill at which point I do engage the parking brake after putting the car in park. Is there any truth to this? Can you really harm your transmission? And what about the new cars that engage the parking brake automatically after you put the car in park? | |||||

| Your parking brake, sometimes called the emergency brake, activates/moves the rear drum shoes bypassing the hydralic system so you can try and stop should the main brake system fail. Sometimes the parking brake cable can rust or freeze and not return to the released position locking the shoes against the drum. I recommend inspecting the parking brake mechanism cable and related components for binding or seizing. | |||||

| parking break is also called emergency brakes so I wouldn't recommend not fixing it. Also on very steep places putting the car in park only isn't the safest option and won't always keep the car from sliding. If you're on a hill and your parking gear fails then without the parking break there is nothing there to keep the car from sliding/moving. Also, the park gear is not meant for holding the whole weight of the vehicle on a hill; it can eventually damage it and it's not cheap to fix the whole transmission. | |||||

| I am assuming I should turn it off because its going to wear out and die fast? No. I dont know how they work A small electric motor drives a screw that pushes the pads on the rotor. Should I disable it? no. Your parking brake should be applied when your car is parked. You should not rely on the parking pawl (how your transmission goes into “park”) to prevent your car from rolling away - Its not uncommon to see the parking pawl break. | Hello, I have 2006 BMW X3. I have Red "Brake" light on all the time on Dashboard, I have already replaced brake Fluid, Rotor(Front/Rear), brake Pad(Front/Rear) and Sensor. I even Changed brake Fluid Sensor and still have Red brake light. When I checked with Voltmeter Warning Switch with brake Fluid Sensor in the brake fluid, Car On but I get continuity reading, I would expect reading to be 1 and not continuity (0). Any Idea or Suggestions ? How can I disable Red brake light Off ? please help, been trying to fix for a while. No brake Fluid Leak. I used to have Yellow brake Light due to issue with ABS for couple years ( Abs, 4X4, brake Light, Tire Pressure lights) but Now it shows Red brake Light, Rest of the lights are Yellow as before When I scan via Scanner, "Red brake light turns Yellow as before but after driving for 5 mts, it becomes "Red" again What can I do to resolve Red brake Light Your Help will be appreciated -Regards, N.D. | |||||

| ... the street when this all happened. I left the vehicle there for 1 month after working out of town. Now after returning, I unhooked the 12v battery, gave it some time. Then I rehooked the 12v battery to see if the I could start the Prius. In order to drive it to the dealer to save towing costs. It started and soon afterwardI got the same two warning lights, thus carefully drove it off to the dealer. | I don't even think about it, like buckling my seat belt, I pull the parking brake every time I stop. Also if you live in a place that gets inspections, if you don't use the parking brake, I hear it cause cause it to break eventually. Maybe that is just up in the rusty north. | |||||

| Hi Scotty!!! I have a 2016 Toyota Corolla LE with CVT transmission with 100,100 miles. My Dad always told me to make sure I put the parking brake on at all times when parking before taking foot off of the brake pedal, to take the pressure off of the transmission. This was years ago, now I can't stop the habit. Was this ever true, or old wives' tale? | |||||

| Just got a new 2023 toyota rav4 with an electric parking brake that is automated. It automatically applies the electric parking brake when you put it in park. And automatically turns if off when shifting out of park. This feature can be disabled. I am assuming I should turn it off because its going to wear out and die fast? I dont know how they work. | Scotty, please help. I have a 2013 F150 with 3.7 liter V6 engine and 6 speed automatic transmission. When I release my parking brake and start moving, my truck begins to squeal as if the brakes were squeaky, my brakes are still good, this only occurs when I apply my parking brake on my driveway (the truck sits on a driveway with a little incline). | The parking brake cable sticking was the 1st actual car question of mine that Scotty answered on video. I got lucky and only the driver's side cable was causing it to stick. Doing that little test is how I learned that drums stop a car more readily going forward than backward. Facing downhill, the badly working parking brake would grab better than facing uphill. | This is my procedure for parking on steep hills or with heavy vehicles (I drive a full size van). It prevents strain on the transmission parking pawl, and keeps it from getting stuck. Stop the vehicle and keep foot on brake Shift transmission into Neutral (N) Apply parking brake Slowly let go of brake pedal, and allow the weight of the vehicle to settle onto the park brake Now shift into Park (P) And remember to always turn your wheels: Facing uphill: with curb - turn towards middle of road without curb - turn towards side of road Facing downhill: t ... | |||||

| Per the rockauto.com database that vehicle has 4-wheel disc brakes. The main consequence of driving with the brakes dragging would be excess wear on the rear brake pads, assuming the parking brake is on the rear. (Some cars have parking brake on the front wheels but most are on the back.) That's what the burning smell was, brake pads overheating. Just examine the brake pads for wear and rotors for scoring. It's possible for overheated rotors to warp but you'd feel that in the brake pedal if it happened. I'd expect if any repair is needed it would be no ... | |||||

| brake fluid is hydroscopic (it absorbs water over time). The braking system is also not perfectly sealed. The boiling point of DOT 3 brake fluid it around 400 degrees Fahrenheit when pure. The boiling point drops over 120 degrees when contaminated by water. If you drive at highway speed down long inclines, you're going to step on the brake to limit your gained speed. Your brakes will be less effective due to the reduced boiling point of the mixture if you never change it. You'll know when that occurs. Normally, brakes are firm. As you ride the brakes going downhill, the boiling point of the water is a lot less than the DOT 3, causing the brake fluid/ water combo to start boiling, and the brake pedal becomes mushy, a phenomenon known as brake fade. That is unsafe, because the car will take longer to stop in an emergency. Do a visual check. Most brake master cylinders have a see-through brake reservoir. When the brake fluid starts becoming dark, that's a sure-fire way to tell your brake fluid needs to be changed. As others have mentioned, though. brake fluid absorbs moisture, and moisture eventually leads to your brake lines rusting from the inside. Personally, I'd make it a habit of changing it every once in a while. Your brake lines will last much longer. | |||||
