| ... 400 have already burned down in the last couple of years, and one catches fire every 5 days. I'm not sure about your assessment that "a few hundred" are effected, a bit more have already burned down, there's no reason to assume that this rate will be constant if it's age related. Well looking at the sheer complexity on new Toyotas and how not repair friendly they are (try working on new Toyotas and see how it's really not what I'd call "DIY friendly"), As I see it Hyundai-Kia treat the owner better, they don't go taking down repair manuals or lobby agai ... | |||||
| Answer to: How do you feel about state car inspection? | 22Relevance | 4 years ago | Dan | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| @mmj , the funny thing is that how it works. In 2010, the my local gov published a report that said "no traffic deaths were caused by technical faults" and praised the inspection policies they had - you know what's the funny part?A year prior (in 2009), the same people published a lesser known report that found that 13% of the vehicles on the road with valid inspections are not roadworthy - the same amount that they have found before the inspections mandate. 🤣Basically, either so many cars are not roadworthy and they are a danger, or the same not road worthy cars don't cause accidents?-Welcome to the realm of incompetence and corruption. As @AutoDIY said, State run programs will always find a way to praise themselves and steal more from the people.-remember when the Italian police shortened yellow-lights to boost up the numbers to make it seem like the system isn't just a tax on the people and simultaneously bring in more profits? This is unrelated to inspections but it shows you how much corruption there is.-The best example I can think of, of corrupt "official independent reports"?I can show you a report by my local "The authority for highway safety" (a government funded non-profit) on speed cameras next to the report done by a committee hired by the police. One provides evidence that cameras have caused significant increase in accidents where they are installed and that they have not changed the growth in accident rates,While the other says the opposite also provides "evidence" - it's not concrete and often is just not related to the effect of what they're studying but just talks about their "performance". (and it’s not like these are countries with rampant corruption, I live in a place that’s the 35 least corrupt nation (about the same as South Korea and Spain) while Italy is more corrupt (ranks 52/172) but still not what’d be considered very corrupt)-Same with roadworthiness inspections, all of those "independent" reports are to serve the interests of the gov and of the automakers .I have so many more examples of so called "independent" reports parsing the gov even when that's not factually correct... | |||||
| Answer to: 2011 Camry VVT rattle on startup | 22Relevance | 5 years ago | BrandonTibbetts | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hi everyone! Hi Scotty! I came here to ask Scotty the same question. I just bought a 2011 Camry XLE with 134k miles. Seems very well maintained and free of issues except it has the same exact issue as what the OP reported. When I looked at the car myself the issue didn't come up. When I paid a mechanic to inspect the car he didn't catch it and didn't mention it. (He did warn me about the oil-burning issue, but this car has the 2AR-FE so it's not affected by that manufacturing defect which Scotty has talked about numerous times). I've since done lots of reading and discovered that this "VVT rattle on cold start" problem is VERY common with Toyotas across a wide range of engine models and years. I'm surprised in all of Scotty's videos about these cars never once, that I recall, has he mentioned it or what - if anything - should be done about it. FWIW, from what I can tell the best thing to do if you have the VVT rattle on startup, at least if you have a 4-cylinder motor is just live with it. It's an expensive job to fix (maybe $1200 at a decent shop?), and it's likely not going to lead to any harm to the overall engine. The wear is confined to the locking pin in the VVT gear, which gets stuck on a cold start due to temporary lack of oil pressure there at the top of the motor. There are many reports of owners leaving this problem alone when it starts at 50k, 100k, 120, etc, and still continuing to get 100k - 200k more miles out of their Toyota engine with only routine maintenance. The only reports I could find of catastrophic engine damage are in the V6s, and even those reports are rare. It seems like the worst that will likely happen in the life of an affected 4-cylinder engine is that eventually the lock pin will get stuck, VVT will be disabled, the check engine light will come on... and then you'll have to either junk the car or spring for that $1200 repair after all. No further damage is likely to result. So it doesn't really make sense to do this repair on an older car IF the worst case from not doing it is ultimately just the same repair anyway. It makes more sense to just live with it (and quite possibly never have to do anything for as long as you own it). | |||||
| Answer to: Which Frontier should I buy | 22Relevance | 5 years ago | S1C EM | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Don't buy older than a 2010. You can search my posts elsewhere, but what you need to check are the radiator for signs of SMOD (look under the cap....if it looks like a frothy strawberry milkshake, turn around and leave) and the differential breather to be sure it hasn't corroded shut. If those things look good, you should be fine. I posted a list elsewhere, but stealing this one from a Frontier forum. Check the radiator part number on the one you're looking at against these: 21410-EA200 [seldom referenced, but may have been installed in some very early 2005’s.] 21410-EA205 [2005 – either 2/09 or 8/09. Listed on some parts websites as P/N 21460-EA205. There is some confusion as to when these were used. Some literature states until 2/09 and other literature states 8/09. P/N IS ASSOCIATED WITH SMOD. ] 21460-EA215 [2005 - either 2/09 until 8/09, see above. Listed as discontinued and replaced by 21460-9CAOE on Nissan parts websites. P/N IS ASSOCIATED WITH SMOD] 21460-EA265 [production dates unknown. P/N IS ASSOCIATED WITH SMOD.] 21460-ZL11A [8/09 through 2010 model year, isolated reports of SMOD.] 21460-ZL31A [production dates unknown. Listed as discontinued on Nissan parts websites , no known reports of SMOD.] 21460-9CAOE [2011 – 2015 model years – no known reports of SMOD] This is the part number for the most current version as of 11/16. | |||||

| Yes, that's the one - that engine in a small, light car moved out pretty well! Too bad Nissan "stole" the name for their crummy SUV. (I have a '67 Rambler with that 343 V8 but it's the larger Rebel.) | |||||
| Should I worry about unintended acceleration in a 2002 Toyota Sienna? | 22Relevance | 5 years ago | Jeffrey hughes | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hello, I have a question regarding the toyota sienna. So I am thinking about buying a 2002 toyota Sienna with 120k miles for $3,500 (Private Seller). I really want to purchase it and use it as a daily driver, however I have seen many reports on the NHTSA site about random acceleration with the throttle body on toyota siennas in general. These reports are made on the very first model of the siennas as well as models all the way up to 2010. I've seen reports where people are just sitting in the parking lot with their sienna idleing and all of the sudden their sienna would autonomously accelerate very fast and end up in a accident. Should I be worried or not? If so then is there a way to prevent random acceleration? | |||||

| Not just gas but, - nice Looks- luxurious features- and good on gas- Under $20,000 If you read stuff from Consumer reports, and other reports, they tell you the Verano is not bad. "The Buick Verano Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 15th out of 36 for compact cars. The average annual repair cost is $478 which means it has lower than average ownership costs. The severity of repairs is average and the frequency of those issues is low, so major repairs are uncommon for the Verano." You don't know what to believe. I just sold a 2003 Mer ... | |||||

| IMHO Carcomplaints.com is a pretty good source of info, and so is Consumer reports - BUT, they both have limitations. They are very limited in "sample size" as they have info based on a few hundred cars of a given model, and are based on reports by the owner, who may not have a lot of mechanical knowledge. But they both give you a good general idea of what's bad. Where they tend to be inaccurate is with low volume cars (not enough examples to generate info) and newer (less than 5 years old) cars - not that many cars break down early in their life, and when ... | |||||
