Hello:
I own a 2000 Toyota 4Runner with 4WD automatic transmission with a manual transfer case. Looking at the owners manual, it states that this car cannot be towed behind a RV. However, visiting a few RV forums, there have been a few articles that indicate that 4runners with 4WD that have an automatic transmission and manual transfer case can be towed. The reason why they state it can be possible is for the following:
- The manual transfer case on this car is splash lubricated by the rotating output shaft gears anytime the driveshaft/rear wheels turn. When placing the transfer case in neutral, the output rotating shaft gears and the input side of the transfer case do not turn. Because they are not turning, they do not require lubrication.
- By placing the automatic transmission in park, the transmission is not turning. Because the transmission is not turning, no lubrication is needed.
To properly flat tow the 4runner behind a RV, all you need to do is the following:
1. Vehicle must be in Park engine off. Do not restart the engine.
2. Shift the transfer case into neutral.
3. Turn ignition 1 click to unlock steering. Keep key in ignition.
Is this correct? Appreciate the insight?
Thank you,
JMAR
I would stick to manual says.
