2005 mustang transmission running dry?

I have a 2005 mustang V6 automatic with 157,000 miles and zero active or pending codes, yet I have an interesting predicament.

The mustang shifts well but on occasion shifts a bit hard into 3rd when pushing it. Smooth idle and no weird noises. However, I recently completed a 20 hour drive and at about 15hrs I began to hear a slight rattling when accelerating. Didn't think much of it. Now the dry-sounding rattling noise is quite present while in drive or reverse.

As stated, I have no engine codes. Oil is full and clean. Spark plugs only a few months old.

This is the predicament: I can near guarantee the transmission fluid was never changed, so I'm not sure if I should have a shop change the transmission fluid or if I should have anything done. I'm worried that if I have it changed, because of its age and milage, the transmission could start to slip. If I do nothing, it could run dry and seize up.

Is there anything I can do to keep the transmission healthy at this stage? I do need to drive 20hrs again and I'd like to know if I can keep this car on the road or not.

do you have a dipstick to tell you if it's dry or not?

These transmissions do not have dipsticks, it's known that in mustangs or other Fords with these transmissions that they typically run dry.

weird. Where does the fluid go?

I haven't got a clue. Never had stains underneath the car in the driveway.
