I have a 1997 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am with 104100-ish miles and a 6 speed manual transmission. Is it true that putting fully synthetic fluid in older Borg Warner transmissions like mine unwise, because it could ruin the carbon blocker rings? I was told by some guys that they are like "paper" and you cannot use synthetic. Or can I put fully synthetic like Royal Purple's manual transmission fluid?

- Well the factory ones came with paper rings which is crap if the transmission has not been rebuilt do not use synthetic fluid in them. Most guys replace them with carbon blocker rings instead of the paper once and then you can use synthetic fluid. And as old as yours is outside the paper ones are either worn out or they have been replaced if you can find the history of the vehicle
