Hi all,
I hope you all having a great day!
I have a 2005 Toyota Camry XLE V6 3.0 and It has almost 151k miles on it. Recently weird sounds started to coming from engine side. It goes bad if i turn on the AC.
Recently I took it to the mechanic and he listened the noise by using a long screwdriver. He said the alternator is going bad and needs to be replaced.
I am wondering can i get it repaired? If not, Should i buy a manufactured one or a one from a junkyard?
Also I recorded videos about the noise. First one with the AC ON and the second with the AC OFF
Thanks
Just for the future reference or if anyone else have the same issue and looking for solution;
I found a used one on eBay, from a crashed car, same model same year with low mileage(It has around 90k miles) and paid $50 bucks. It has a limited warranty too.
not a very good deal if you ask me
Why?
Because a used alternator with 90k on it for $50 is just a terrible deal. You're going to be back under the hood, banging your knuckles taking it back out pretty soon. You should have bought a new one. I thought you said you were going to Autozone.
The risk is high but mine did last almost +150k miles and I don't have an intention to keep the car, more than a year.
I think still, it is a good deal. It will be Denso.
Also, it seems Scotty's alternator lasted +200k miles. Still risky but worth to try I believe, if you will not keep the car for years.
Just out of curiosity, how much should you pay for the shipping and how long you should wait to get it back if it goes bad? One of the reasons you should not buy these stuff online unless you can return it in local store.
There was no shipping cost and in next week, I will be getting the part. I bought it on eBay and in case if I need to return it, I don't there would be a problem?
Here is the store that I bought from -> https://www.ebay.com/usr/drivelineparts
I just watched it, thanks 🙂 Nice coincidence that he just shared it today.
You’re welcome. Good luck.
No. Modern alternators are not repairable. You can't disassemble them without destroying them. On the plus side, you can return the bad one for a core credit, and get a replacement fairly inexpensively. The old one gets rebuilt.
Thank you for the answer! Can i do the replacement at AutoZone for example?
What do you recommend?
Yup Autozone is just fine. In fact I think that's where Scotty goes too.
Got it!. Yeah, Scotty goes there too.
