In general there's only one answer to that: Miata.

Thank you, i like them they do are bit hard to come by here in Mexico City, btw i love your AMC badge, i restored back in the day a 1972 javelin AMC, the v8 one, such a great car.

Nissan Z car, or if you around 10k you could get a C5 or even if you get a good deal a Z06.

or alternately, if you’re fine with having two small rear bucket seats – a Volvo C30 (3 door hot hatch) is a blast to drive.
I own one, got it when it was 9 years old with only 70,000 miles for $6,000 has been a fun reliable sports coupe.

Subaru BRZ/Scion FRS/Toyota 86

Get either one of these with a manual transmission.

There is no such thing as a cheap, fun and relatively reliable motor vehicle.  It is a contradiction in terms at the very least.

There are plenty cheap, reliable, fun, and even fast car all rolled into one, you are not telling the truth when you say something as untrue as that. It is not a contradiction, yes you have to look for them, but I mean a Toyota 86 or BRZ could be a good car for him. There are plenty of affordable, fun and reliable cars to chose from ,
