My wife and I are looking at used compact SUVs. While we like Honda and Toyota reliability, we don't care for the looks of either the RAv4 or the CR-V. The second gen CX-5 has really caught our attention. How does Mazda's reliability compare to it's Honda and Toyota rivals?
Type-R, you got like ALL of that backwards. Mazda>>>>>Subaru.🤣
See below: It’s a solid choice and Mazda’s reliability is up there in the Top 3 right behind Honda (in fact right on their heels). Now, for 2018 model year and newer the 2.5L naturally aspirated (NA) Skyactiv-G engine came with cylinder deactivation, and currently there is no way to disable it (that I know of) so I would avoid that if you plan to keep the vehicle for as long as possible. 2017 model year did not have cylinder deactivation on the 2.5L NA engine.

What is the problem with the cylinder deactivation?
@ampere
This is described in agonizing detail in our Frequently Asked Questions on the main page
Oh crap I'll look at that sorry haha
The cylinder deactivation "feature" can be deactivated in my country, by button every time you start the car, or as seen in "Live hack" videos, by cranking the AC temperature to Lowest (Car usually saves the last used temperature on shut down and load it at start up therefore no need of pushing the little button every time you get in the car). Not sure about it as I don't have one 🙁
@kuntari234 I think you are confusing this with the start stop system. There is no way to disable the cylinder deactivation on the Mazdas.
@ÐayWalker ah, right. Yes I did. My bad.
the CX-5 came in 2nd when purchased in '19, we liked it very much, have you driven one?
my wife had trouble seeing out of the back of the CX-5
I have a 2016 cx5. I have never had a problem with it. I perfered the looks and drive over the Honda and Toyota. Some people say mazda is almost as good others say they are good but not like Honda Toyota. I own a Toyota as well and I see the quality the same. I would say go for the Mazda. I doubt you will regret it.
It's ok for reliability. Not on par with Honda/Toyota, but you could definitely do worse.
From experience, I know those Rav4s can last but the CR-V is really awful for handling water puddles or very small sheets of ice. If anything, I would recommend the Rav4 but not the Mazda. However, have you considered a Subaru compact? Those are also very solid and in my opinion better looking
