| Answer to: Should I repair my timing chain cover leak | 25Relevance | 4 years ago | toyotagrl | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| The timing chain cover oil leak is well known on the V6 Toyota 2gr-fe engines and is a lot of work. Engine has to come out to reseal the timing chain cover. It books for 25 +/- hours so yes, it's expensive, but only you can decide if you want to dish out the $$ to get it fixed. | |||||

| Hi I've noticed a strange rattling sound while my car is idling, noise is corresponding with the engine speed. It's getting more frequent but not louder with rpm increase. 1.8 vavlematic, 6 speed manual with 40k miles, no trouble codes on the computer. Link to the video: Is this a bad/ streached timing chain noise or what? But bad timing chain in 40k miles toyota? | |||||

| 2007 Lexus ES350 replaced Valve Cover Gasket, silicon dropped into chain cover area | 26Relevance | 5 years ago | jwstasi | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hi Scotty. I appreciate your military service, and the great service which you provide us all w/car mechanics. I just replaced a valve cover gasket on 07 Lexus ES350, for front head, and all seemed to go pretty well, except a piece of silicon which was part of the bead which was from the sealing of the timing chain cover, to the engine, fell into the chain cover area, and could not see it or remove it, so is likely in cover area, and/or oil pan. Should I be concerned, and do you think the oil filter will capture it? I thought of just draining the oil, but no ... | |||||
| Answer to: low idle speed, gear shift does not return to neutral | 26Relevance | 5 years ago | Dan | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hello, Engine noises on that generation of VW engines is usually caused by the timing chain. The HTP family of engines (2003 ~ 2016) manufactured under the "EA111" series is known for the chain getting stretched and the tensioner failing as early as 35,000km. (usually, from my experience, when the chain is starting to go out, you hear chain rattle at low rpm under load) The rpm you've described is completely normal, but just to be sure, knowing Skoda you'd want to clean your throttle (I think your generation had a manual throttle) and also the PCV valve might need to be cleaned - although this usually happens at higher kilometrages. Please elaborate on the gearbox issue, as it's quite unclear... I'm guessing that you're saying that the gearbox does not go into gear when shifting at speed? Generally with these old common European models, If the shift cable, clutch fork, clutch operation checks out, and you really are sure that it does indeed have a serious internal issue, I'd just recommend putting in a used gearbox from a junkyard - as they're usually relatively inexpensive. If a mechanic checks out your car and says that it does need both a timing chain, tensioner, and gearbox work, you might want to consider spending the money that it would cost to repair this car and get a low millage Japanese economy car instead as these old 1.2L engines, in my experience, don't last long at all... Good luck. | |||||
| Answer to: 2011 Buick Regal Timing Chain | 25Relevance | 2 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Engine problems are pretty common with those, with some timing chain issues being reported. However, what exactly does "pistons, etc." entail? The quoted price seems extremely high for replacing the timing chain on a 4-cylinder engine and is more in line with engine replacement. You did not say what kind of shop you took the car to but you might want to get another opinion, preferably from a good independent mechanic. Stay away from dealers and chains such as Pep Boys, Firestone, etc. | |||||
| 2007 Corolla Timing Chain Tensioner will not reinstall. | 25Relevance | 4 years ago | Toyota Corroded | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hello My 2007 corolla 5 spd (1zz-fe) had a timing chain tensioner leak, so I removed it to install a new one. When I tried to push it back into the bore on the engine it won't seat completely, it is 1/4" from being fully inserted. It is a genuine OEM part that I got from the dealer I compared it to the old one, it looks identical It is fully compressed with the pin latched and locked I managed to get a few pictures of inside the bore. It looks like the black plastic tensioner bumper on the timing chain guide arm is pushing inside the hole. Any help towards a solution would be greatly appreciated. | |||||

| These have a issues with stretch timing chains. Remove the timing chain tensioner cover plate located on the front cover and see if the tensioner is extended all the way out. If it is, the chain has streched and thing is off. | |||||

| Answer to: Bad Timing Chain Cause Misfire ? | 25Relevance | 4 years ago | Nathaniel J. | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I have a 2011 Nissan Frontier and I have a very rough vibration at idle. Now my case is different than yours. My truck is not misfiring, and my spark advance at idle is ~15 degrees and stays pretty consistent so it’s not my timing chain. I would make sure you look at ignition or spark advance to see if your timing chain is worn. Mine is just the torque converter being worn out. Now the vibration is still even there in park and Neutral but it’s not as bad as when it’s in drive. But yeah I wish you good luck! Kind Regards, Nathaniel J. | |||||
| Answer to: Ford explorer timing chain issue | 25Relevance | 4 years ago | scottykilmer | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Wow yeah realized of course the engine oils what lubricates the timing chain if it gets dirty and wears out the chain will wear out faster. And with modern engines getting higher and higher pressures that's why they invented that gf6 oil to keep the timing chains from wearing keep the piston rings from wearing and so if the guy didn't change the oil often enough or use the correct oil yeah it'll wear out faster | |||||
| Timing chain | 25Relevance | 4 years ago | Mercedes girl | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I have a 2006 Mercedes Benz c230 with 121437 miles and can be either a manual or automatic. No codes! I was told it was the timing chain because the cam pressure is not rising when it's being turned over. When the car quit on me it was like it just powered down and then shut off. It would turn over normally but not start. Had the crankshaft position sensor changed still same results. So was told it had to the timing chain. Should I spend the money to have it fixed or sell the car? FYI.. I love this car!! | |||||
| The Dealer Says My BMW Needs a New Timing Chain? | 25Relevance | 5 years ago | JimMichaels1986 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Scotty, I recently sold my 2013 BMW 328i 2.0 with just over 100k miles to a high school kid. Sometimes when he starts the car, it will not drive and he needs to restart it. He took it to a BMW dealer who says it needs a new timing chain, and two new turbos? I have never heard of a timing chain needing replacement. Do you think the pulley needs to be replaced like he says, and the turbos, or is it something else? I know, I know, it is a BMW endless money pit, but I feel bad for the kid because as soon as he bought it, it started having problems. | |||||

| Hello Scotty, I would like to tell you that I have had same issue with a 2014 chevy Cruze with 1.4L turbo getting knock sensor code. My mechanic found orange timing chain guide bolts have come very lose. This causes timing chain to jump and chatter, same issue you had with costumer you help with chevy sonic. Once my mechanic tightened bolt down corrected issue running good again. Thought you might like to know if you ever experienced this before on over Chevy’s. Thanks again for all your help you do!! | |||||

| Hi Scotty, I own a 2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5 Premium automatic. I baby the car, but when I asked my local mechanic about timing chain replacement they said it doesn't need to be changed ever (unless engine is disassembled). I have 91,000 miles with no issues or noises, but I always thought even a timing chain needs replacement around 100,000 up to 120,000? Is Subaru the exception to the rule? Thanks, Scott Frederick Penn Valley, CA. | |||||
