| Subaru Outback P0420 code | 23Relevance | 5 years ago | jmbbrowder | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hey Scotty, I recently purchased an 05 subaru outback 3.0 liter H6 L.L bean edition. about a week into driving it a noticed the check engine light came on and the cruise control was blinking. I ran the code at autozone and it came up as a p0420 code. I've used cataclean twice and it only did the trick for a couple of days. Do you think this is an O2 sensor issue or a bad catalytic converter. Thanks, Justin B | |||||

| ... AWD configuration and what long term reliability might look like. My wife prefers the look and feel of the outback, but I'm not a fan of CVTs, especially in mountain driving, and am skeptical of subaru's overall long term reliability. Note that we keep our vehicles, historically Hondas and Toyotas, beyond 250k miles. | |||||

| Hey I am looking at a 2007 subaru outback with a manual transmission and it has 156,000 miles on it. The problem that I am experiencing is a screeching noise when I accelerate but as soon as I let off it goes away. What could this be, and is it an easy fix? Thanks! | |||||

| Scotty, my wife has a 2014 subaru outback that we purchased new and it only has 60k miles on it. For several years now, it’s had trouble starting. It usually ends up starting, but it sounds like a struggle, especially in cold weather. Wasn’t historically a problem if the engine and/or weather was warm. Multiple subaru dealers have told us they “can’t recreate the issue,” even though I show them recorded videos of it happening. In the winter of 2022, it finally wouldn’t start. subaru dealer replaced the starter, which seemed to fix the problem; however, the i ... | |||||

| If you are looking subaru, I think a more appropriate comparison would either be the Forester or the outback. They seem to be closer to a RAV4 in size and scope. A Crosstrek may have been comparable to a RAV4 many many generations ago, but not the latest RAV4. I would compare a Crosstrek to a Toyota Corolla Cross or CH-R. There isn’t an exact comparison, but those seem closer in size and scope to each other, IMHO. IMHO, subaru has the more functional user interface, for the AC and Entertainment Controls. Toyota is all over the place with theirs, whereas ... | |||||

| ... hand tools (except for changing the spark plugs). Even though the FB25D is new for the Crosstrek, it has had a few years in other applications (Forester, outback) without any major trouble. The underlying FB25-series motor is bombproof and has none of the head gasket problems of the older EJ engines. AWD systems add additional complexity, but subaru has theirs pretty well sorted. I've never known anyone to experience a failure with late model subarus.* The subaru CVTs also seem to have most of the bugs worked out. I wouldn't tow with it and I would chang ... | |||||

| an Altima vs subaru Legacy But why those two? They're both very "meh" cars. It's pretty weak from a mechanical standpoint, especially the CVT. Also, when I recently was shopping for my car, what shocked me was how poorly equipped Nissans were - "Premium" models were equipped worse than the 8 year old base model $17k (msrp) Ford I had at the time... Looking on Nissans website the Altima is no different: NO ProPILOT, NO AEB, NO LDW, NO Trace Control, NO Brake hold, NO Dual Zone Temperature, NO rear passenger vents, NO leather on the steering wheel, A ... | |||||

| For years I've been lecturing people on why they shouldn't buy a brand new, off the showroom floor car. Recently I've been thinking about upgrading a 2016 Ford escape that I inherited. I've always had my heart set on a subaru outback and the wilderness is really the one I would like to have. However, with the prices of used cars these days being outrageously high it might be better to just bite the bullet and buy a new car. All subarus have CVT transmissions and Scotty's videos regarding CVT transmissions and the negativity surrounding them has made me hesit ... | |||||

| ... trailers was a subaru outback. Turns out they are actually quite effective at the job. But I cringed every time I saw one, for exactly the reason @chucktobias said - the subaru CVTs just aren’t robust enough for towing. CVT failure is probably the most common big-$ repair on contemporary subaru’s. They’re getting better, but I don’t think I would put any unnecessary stresses on them. I suppose that you could probably be ok with an outback XT for short trips on the flatlands. Maybe just go with what you have for now, but ask around campgrounds to ge ... | |||||

| Hi Scotty, I have a 2022 subaru outback XT with 12,000 miles. I know you hate them, but I didn’t know that when I bought it. I probably wouldn’t have purchased the Turbo if I had watched your videos sooner. About a month ago I noticed it was leaking oil, not much, about the size of a small pancake every night. I took it to the dealer and the service technician tried to convince me that I was probably just seeing water. So I explained to him that I parked my car in the garage every night and I had put some paper towels down. I then presented him with the pape ... | |||||
