| Yes, any mechanic will align the timing marks and check for slack in the chain . But once you're into the labor costs to go that deep for them to check for slack, you'd be crazy not to just replace the timing chain, timing chain Tensioner, timing chain Guides, timing chain Tensioner Guide, timing Crankshaft Sprocket, Variable Valve timing (VVT) Sprockets, timing Gear Oiler, and Variable Valve timing (VVT) Solenoids . They come in a kit. And Do Not go to the dealer. They will screw you. Not an opinion, it's a fact | |||||
| Whine after timing chain replacement? | 60Relevance | 3 years ago | joejjja | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I have a 2.4 2007 sky with 123k miles. LE5 engine with a 5L40e trans. I just did a timing chain replacement, and when the car runs it sounds like it's got a supercharger. It is whining relative to the engine RPM.I took the main drive and power steering BELTs off and started the car, hoping it was an alternator whine or something... the whine persisted.I replaced the timing chain, balance chain, cam sprockets, and crankshaft timing and balance chain sprockets. I left the original auxiliary balance chain sprockets on. Google says that this whine is likely be ... | |||||
| 2008 Chevy Cobalt 2.2 ecotech Timing Chain Question (Timing Marks On The Chain) | 59Relevance | 3 years ago | buck2k13 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I have a 2008 chevy cobalt that had a bad chain guide. I've got it all took apart and ready to reassemble, but have a question about the timing marks on the chain. This chain has no timing marks. I understand alot of the replacement chains have marks on them to align them with the spots on the cam gears and crankshaft. I have the cams and crankshaft all set where they are suppose to be. Since I do not have these link color marked chains, can I just go ahead and use this chain that doesn't have the marks? I mean, as long as the cams are set (EXH at 1 ... | |||||

| Hey Scotty, my friend bought a 2008 Toyota Sienna with about 180,000 miles. He was driving it for a couple months now, but during his last oil change, the shop said he might need to replace the timing chain in his engine. My friend says that during a cold start in the morning the chain will rattle for a few seconds then it goes away. The car runs good and has no trouble codes. Recently, I went with my friend to my personal mechanic who I have been going to for many years now. I wanted to ask my mechanic if it really does need a timing chain just for a second ... | |||||

| " Toyota Highlander: Between 2001 and 2007 the four cylinder Toyota Highlander used a timing chain and the V6 was on a timing belt. In the 2008 model year all models switched over to the timing chain. The one exception here was the Toyota Highlander Hybrid which kept with the timing belt until 2011 and then it switched over to a timing chain." | |||||
| Answer to: Replace Timing Chain? | 39Relevance | 5 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| On a well-designed and well-maintained engine it's not an issue. I've never heard of Toyota engines being prone to timing chain problems. Some GM engines are, and the worst was probably the Triumph Stag V8 that needed timing chain replacement at 25K intervals due to exceptionally poor design, but those are outliers. I wouldn't worry about it on a Toyota. Additionally, timing chains give warning and will start rattling before they break. Even then it is frequently just the tensioner that needs to be replaced. (My car has over 360K miles on the original timin ... | |||||

| Hello. 2002 Toyota Echo. Manual transmission . 222000 km. Do I need to change timing chain, the chain guide, the tensioner now? People say timing chain is life time of the car; what does that mean? But the guide is just a plastic piece & will wear our. I asked Toyota dealership & no definite answer. Also will the chain give pre warning signs like rattling noise before it breaks, stretches out, etc. Meaning can I rely on warning signs first to know when to change the chain & all other accessories? Pls help answer. Thank you very much . | |||||
| Is it worth fixing the timing chain 02 marquis 175k | 45Relevance | 12 months ago | GrandMarquis711 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| ... you were talking about the grand marquis… well I think I should just put the money into it and pray nothing else goes wrong for at least a year. Although they did recommend suspension work, but I have a co-worker that would be willing to do that for cheap, he never changed the timing chain on an eight cylinder so does not feel confident to do that type of work. So far I spent nearly $3000 to pass inspection this year. 2065 for cats /4 oxygen sensors / gas cap $375 to fix loose wiring and a tire needed to pass safety part of the inspection. $500 to change ... | |||||
| Answer to: Broken Timing Chain... Maybe. | 44Relevance | 4 years ago | jack62 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Your 2.5L Lexus engine is a Non-Interference engine (1) so a broken timing chain wouldn't destroy the engine. That said, a timing chain breaking on a Lexus with under 200,000 miles would be extremely unlikely. (not just getting hit by lightning unlikely, like getting hit by a meteor unlikely). Let's look at how your timing chains are setup. You didn't say which 3 cylinders had low compression. It doesn't matter. The camshafts on both cylinder banks are setup the same way. The large timing chain turns the intake cams and the secondary (No. 2) timing chains are connected by sprockets on the intake cams to turn the exhaust cams. So if your mechanic thinks a No 2 timing chain is broken he could simply pull off a valve cover and look. But I don't think this is the problem. I think the problem is related to the symptom that made you change your alternator (1) | |||||
| Timing, chain or belt | 35Relevance | 3 years ago | Charlieboy | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Scotty, I would like your opinion on timing chains versus timing belts. In the 70s timing chains never seemed to be a problem but I’ve noticed massive amounts of especially GM vehicles needing new engines due to timing chain failures. Do you still recommend timing chains over timing belts? It seems that the Japanese cars with timing belts suffer far fewer catastrophic engine failures. Or is this just a problem with engineering at Ford Chrysler and GM. Thanks in advance. Your videos have been a great source of knowledge for me. | |||||
| Answer to: Should I replace the timing chain | 35Relevance | 4 years ago | Santanaminer14 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Well marina ive worked on cars too myself ( even rebuilt some transmissions on a toyota ) but timing belts must be replaced on a regular basis, but timing chains do not. Theres no reason to alter the timing chain unless its damaged, strained, or otherwise affected. If there is a problem with the timing chain, your car will most likely have one or more issues. For example it might cause the engine to stall or turn off and will be more vulnerable to catastrophic damage. Thank you for your time! | |||||
| Should I buy a 2010 CRV that had timing chain replaced? | 35Relevance | 2 years ago | mspurgin2747 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I'm looking at buying a 2010 Honda CRV 143,900 miles on it for my daughter. Dealer said timing chain was replaced with OEM parts. Great on the OEM parts, but I hadn't heard of timing chains going out with only 144k miles without some abuse like maybe infrequent oil changes etc. Since the timing chain has been replaced, should this take care of it or should this be a vehicle to avoid? If I should not just run from this vehicle, are there any other things I should look for if it really did need a timing chain replacement due to pool maintenance by a prio ... | |||||
