Hey Scotty,

can you explain AWD to me? Also, is it a better system to have over FWD or RWD when it comes to snow and slight mountain trail driving? Thank you!

Hi @goodvibes24,

Here is a fun discussion, a must read !

In my opinion, AWD really helps you move in snow/icy conditions compared to FWD. However both are equally bad in terms of stopping unless you have a good set of snow tires. If you are planning to head to the mountains often AWD + snow tires will get you through most situations.

It also depends if you planning to buy a used vehicle or buy or lease. If you are buying a used vehicle with high mileage AWD cars can give you maintenance issues, which is why Scotty , @mmj, @kerem would recommend buying FWD.If you are buying a new car, AWD isn't that bad an option if you are buying a Toyota. Now if you are leasing it, no strings attached, Subarus would be the most versatile AWD systems out there and you can ditch them once they start giving problems. (extended warranty might help here).

Here are some other videos which can hopefully answer some of your questions, sorry for the long list.

and yes it is always safe to have a set of tire chains in the trunk 🙂

Beautiful, thank you!

What maintenance is needed for AWD? 2016 Subaru Legacy

Sorry I don't have that much experience.
If you are considering purchasing one, I would suggest writing a new question on the forum.
good luck.

maintenance should be described in the owner's manual. There will be one or two more gear oils to change in driveline components. That's the only maintenance I'm aware of.

FWD is when the front wheels drive the car.

RWD is when the back wheels drive the car.

AWD is when all 4 wheels drive the car.

For most situation FWD will suffice.

RWD is if you like to go fast and do burnouts. I don’t recommend RWD because it has a tendency to tail fish.

AWD gives you the most traction. Granted it cost more money, and cost more to maintain. Get it if you need it, like if it rains all the time, or it snows more often than not.
