Ive been looking around for turbocharged cars and found a 2017 WRX with 70,00km on it and also a 2018 civic with 35,000km on it. How big of a difference in reliability is between the two? and Hyndai also has their elantra gt n-line cars now, I found a 2019 with 15,000km on it. Has hyundai stepped up their quality enough to consider that? Id want to get about 70,000km out of it. Thanks in advance.
I agree the civic will be a better daily - lighter smoother clutch, mainly. (I have a 2018 WRX and drove a friend’s civic si, before he traded it for a wrx).
They are both pretty reliable. The WRX you are looking at has twice the miles of the civic, but neither is very high.
The question is the quality of the miles. Those are both sporty cars, beloved by tuners and often driven very hard. If one has been beaten up and the other babied, that will make more of a difference than any intrinsic differences between the models.
Otherwise, they are both good cars and you won’t be wrong to choose either. Get the one you are more passionate about (and therefore will enjoy more and maintain better).
have you had to replace the head gaskets yet? because Ive seen online that around the 70,000-100,000km range is where alot of people replace those. but yea I'll have to check the carfax history and test drive one first to see which one speaks to me more.
Nah. The head gasket issue was on the older EJ engines. Mostly pre-2010. No unusual issues with the FA series engines ( the 17 WRX has the FA20DIT, which is turning out to be a pretty reliable motor).
Forget about the Hyundai. I would say the Civic would be a better daily driver than the WRX. Keep in mind the turbocharged engine in the Civic is prone to oil dilution while the naturally aspirated engine does not have those issues.
Our '18 Civic Sport HB has not had any issues and it's been daily driven. No problems with oil dilution either.
Forget Hyundai. If you want longevity, go with the Civic. The WRX is faster and can be more fun to drive, but it will not go the same distance that Civic will.
Turbocharged engines can be very reliable if properly cared for. Mine will shortly have 360,000 miles on it and is running strong. However there is additional complexity due to the turbo, and the turbocharger itself is a wear item that is expensive to replace. (The previous owner of my car replaced the turbocharger at a bit over 200,000 miles.)
Well if you want something fun go with the WRX. If you want something fun and reliable get the Civic. With the reliability and quality of a Honda engine you should not have any problems with the turbocharger, Honda designs the turbocharger to last the lifetime of the vehicle although some of them fail before then. I would just go with a naturally aspirated engine to avoid the extra wear turbochargers cause to an engine. They are both great cars but the Honda will last you the longest. I would pass on the Hyundai.
Id want to get about 70,000km out of it.
