  • Hey Scotty I’m a new subscriber, I was wondering, I’m a 17 year old Trynn to buy a used car either a 2016 Honda Civic or a 2013 Honda Civic, which should I buy? Is the 2016 civic cvt transmission very bad?

Go with the 2013 civic. 2014+ they started using CVT.

I own a 2013 Honda Civic LX and it is overall the best car I’ve ever owned. Even the base model 2013 comes with Bluetooth and a little backup camera. I drove a 2018 Civic and it basically felt exactly the same, just looked different. It’s the only reason I haven’t upgraded yet. I didn’t notice the 10 horsepower difference at all and while the 2016 is a little bigger, the size difference isn’t much. Save your money and get the 2013. But one slight issue is that with the 2013, the Bluetooth audio has like a 2 or 3 second lag so if you’re watching a video while hooked up to Bluetooth, the audio won’t be perfectly in sync with the video because the audio is like 2 or 3 seconds behind. Since you’re 17 years old, I’m assuming you will have your phone hooked up to the Bluetooth all the time lol. It doesn’t really bother me to the point where I’d choose a different car though.

My opinion is Honda has the best CVT, Toyota close second. If you are comfortable with the CVT, maintain it every 30k miles with special Honda oil, I've never had an issue with them. But if don't maintain, or use cheap oil, they fail.

Otherwise, remember condition is very important, so get a mechanic to check whatever you want.

It's not that the CVT's are so bad, but the other has a reputation for long life.

The sad part is to know that the majority of smaller cars and SUV's will soon all have CVT's.

There won't be any options in the coming years, so maybe lean towards the standard automatic if only for the memory.
