| Inspect used car with OBD2 Live Data | 15Relevance | 5 years ago | acarroll | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I'm looking for a used Toyota or Honda with around 100,000 miles. I'm going to use my OBD2 scanner when I check them out. I already know about checking for DTCs and whether they have been reset. I'd like to know what live data parameters a pro would consider to be the most important in determining engine health. I'm familiar with ST and LT fuel trim. What others are useful and what can they tell you? | |||||

| My 2017 Hyundai Elantra SE w/ 87000 miles shuts off after 15-20 min driving. I notice a faint whirling sound from the engine bay and then the vehicle shuts off. The car shuts off after reaching normal temp and during low speeds or braking. Sometimes the RPM fluctuates other times the car simply shuts off during low speeds. NO codes appear on the Foxwell OBD2 scanner. NO Check engine light. I used injector cleaner but this didnt work. The car shuts off 100% of the time after driving 15-20 min. The car restarts everytime.. No sluggish start when restarting the vehicle. Please let me know what may be the problem. | just got my tundra 2008 5.7 @ 155k miles i should of got it a certified dealer ship where they do some kind of inspection. the air filter was dirty spark plugs had plenty of miles. oil was black these are basic things ....drove it home 2 days later codes came up misfire types. runs fine but tough starting..did the sp plgs ,Maf, air filter sensor the coils with the misfire codes . Now getting ready for the fuel pressure this weekend. one more interesting thing was that i check the spark plug two weeks later after i ran fuel injection cleaner the top threads of the sprk plug near the spark was all dark brown not oily ( i couldn't rub it off) so maybe carbon or too hot. checked gap .. strange stuff ...maybe timing chain.$$ not sure what could of caused this struff . could be two problem hot from bad chain and maybe fuel reg needs replacing.. sorry for long post . just looking for clues. again thx for sharing. i have OBD2 code reader Scotty are u still in houston area? im in tomball any suggestion i would be greatfull can it be something crazy like caty or ox sensors.i used the OBD2 and smog came back ok | |||||
| Radiator Fan not working automatically | 12Relevance | 1 year ago | Mannan960 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hi, This is my car details: 2012 Kia Sorento CRDI 4 Cyl Diesel 2.2L Odometer: 697,000 KM (approximately 430,000 miles) Engine is original since brand new Gearbox 520,000 KM (or 323,000 miles) I’m having 2 separated but related issues with my cooling system on my car. Issue 1: When the air con is switched off, the front radiator fan is ‘always off’. So the engine starts to gradually overheat, especially during idling. However, when I switch on the Air con, then the radiator fan kicks in and starts to work perfectly fine. I find this to be very abnormal, and very likely is a electrical issue. Recently I replaced all my fuel injectors with used parts, because they were too noisy and worn out, which were contributing to overheating at the time. However, at the moment I am convinced that my fuel injectors are working OK. And that the cooling issue is to do with the fan itself, not working when it should. Issue 2: The temperature gauge on my dash is not showing the correct reading. When engine starts overheating, the temperature gauge doesn’t correctly reflect. Instead, it shows middle / which is normal. Or it shows cold when car has been switched off for long, and then slowly goes up to middle. When the engine and coolant start overheating, or sometimes due to total loss of coolant, the temperature gauge does not indicate overheating. It still stays in the middle indicating normal operation. (which is false). Which itself is dangerous as it means I’ll end up cooking the engine if I don’t know of coolant leak and overheating. That’s why I purchased a digital heads up display, that connects to my OBD2 port. I am able to see the correct coolant and engine temperature from a digital OBD2 Heads Up Display HUD, which I purchased from ebay. However, the front radiator fan not turning on, unless Air Con is switched on. And the temperature gauge on my dash not correctly reflecting on true coolant and engine temperature overheating. I am not sure if there is any coolant leak, because of too much water condensation on bottom of the car due to air con running all the time. Although recently when doing oil change, I saw a tiny green coolant leak or bubble like drop on bottom of my AC compressor. My car is a right-hand drive, Australia left road. | |||||
| Answer to: Auto stop permanent or temporary disabler | 12Relevance | 2 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| The problem with those aftermarket disablers is typically they plug into the OBD2 diagnostic port. As Scotty has stated many times, that port is designed for temporary diagnostic use only, not for continuous use by aftermarket add-ons. In fact a poorly designed gadget can damage your vehicle's complex electrical system whether it plugs into the OBD2 port or is directly wired in. If the Tacoma allows the driver turn off the start/stop system with the existing controls I would just get into the habit of doing that when you fire up the engine. That's the safest option. | |||||
| Answer to: Can a 90's car be reliable? | 12Relevance | 2 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| My '97 Saab has been pretty reliable since buying it in 2011 for $1500. At that time it had a bit over 200K miles. Until I went semi-retired in the wake of Covid I was on the road constantly for business in that car, sometimes traveling to customers over 100 miles away. Of course it has needed repairs over the years. Only got stuck once though years ago when the fuel pump quit on me, but that can happen in any car. (When that happened I had AAA tow the thing home and I just installed a new pump.) Which brings up that you need to bear in mind with an older car you do have to be prepared for things to wear out. Even if the engine and drivetrain are basically in good shape there are lots of other parts that can fail. It helps a lot if you can do most of your own repair work or you can wind up with some pretty hefty repair bills. Also good to have AAA or another towing service just in case. Also keep in mind that if you do need to use a mechanic a lot of them won't work on pre-OBD2 cars so might want to stick with 1996 or newer vehicles. (Even if you do your own repairs it's nice to have OBD2 diagnostics available.) | |||||
| Answer to: Changing out car battery | 12Relevance | 3 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| A lot of those memory savers plug into the OBD2 port instead of cigarette lighter. Unless the car is pre-OBD2 (you didn't say what you have) that should always work since the power line on that port is always active. | |||||
