| Nissan Tensioner Rattling Noises | 19Relevance | 3 years ago | David6282023 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I have a 2009 Nissan Maxima SV with only 187,000km (116,000 miles) on it that has been giving me hell. It only has 2 modifications done to it, a full straight pipe exhaust (muffler, resonator, cat delete) + cold air intake (takeda). When I first purchased my car, the timing chain was starting to rattle only on cold starts. I took it a local mechanic shop, and got over ($4,150+) of work done to it. Below is all the parts/work that have been done: Replace Inner Tie Rod (MEVMS30719 A/V) Replace Serp belt(4070670 P/S) Replace Lower accessory drive belt idler pulley (89506 P/S) Replace Upper accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (89525 P/S) Alignment Remove/Replace Battery (MPG35 P/S) Replace Chain (130289HP0A OEM) Replace Chain (13028JA10B OEM) Replace Guide (13091JA10A OEM) Replace Guide (13085JA10A OEM) Replace Tensioner (130709N00A OEM) Replace Tensioner (13070JK21C OEM) Replace Tensioner (13070JK21B OEM) Replace Silicone Gasket (135107Y000 OEM) Replace Silicone Gasket (15066ZL80C OEM) Replace Silicone Gasket (15066ZL80D OEM) Replace Timing cover Gasket (TCS45997 P/S) Replace Engine Oil Pan Gasket Set (OS30688 P/S) Replace Engine Oil Pan Gasket Set (OS30696 P/S) Replace Water Pump (GAT43520 A/V) Replace VVT Sprocket (13025-JK21A W/P) Replace Drive Belt Tensioner Replace Gasket (GA1/32 AES) Replace Gasket (GA1/64 AES) Replace Silicone Gasket (23797JA10B OEM) Replace Seal (15066JA10A OEM) Replace Wheel Nut (559-114 P/S) Replace Exhaust Gasket (31377 P/S) Remove Unnecessary Heat Shields (That were causing rattling noises) Replace Secondary Timing Chain Guide/Tensioner Labour (11.50 hours, $1,345.50) This is also what the mechanics wrote down: "Remove and replace timing chains, tensioners, guides and re-seal oil galleries. Other shop called timing job, removed front cover, found one VVT was bad, found primary tensioner had a blown seal and leaking oil and found a gasket for the rear oil galleries to be leaking. Replaced VVT, resealed rear oil gallery and replaced all timing related components as per invoice. Reassembled, checked, starts and runs great. Please note, oil gallery that was leaking that we resealed is part of rear timing cover, the gaskets were not sold separately. Rear timing cover was over $700, discussed with customer, this was too much for them. We made gaskets for it and believe it will be okay but will not be able to warranty repair. If it leaks again vehicle will need a new rear timing cover. A/C leak found. Replaced O'rings on high pressure and low pressure lines going to A/C compressor. No gas found in system. No gas was put in after repair. In order for the A/C to work, will need to check leak and refill." The mechanics said in the text above, that $700 was too much for the customer (me). I never told them over the phone it would be too much or anything like that. After I got my vehicle back from them, it just fine with a slight rattle noise for about a month and then I had to come back due to severe rattling noises from one of the timing chain tensioners. I was pretty angry (reasonably so), the mechanics did mention to me that possibly some of my other VVT's were going bad and yet again they told me they did not replace them because I told them I didn't have enough money to get them to do the job... which again isn't true. So now just recently they replaced a timing chain/tensioner again (for free under "warranty" lol), and then did my spark plugs (which I asked them to do), and then made me pay for some gaskets (totaling around $300). And now the timing chain tensioner is rattling again... I'm on this forum just asking on advice on what I should do, because this is my first car as a teenager and I've literally poured all my money into this car and can't afford to buy a new one (especially in today's market I won't find anything good where I live). I have a feeling that the reason I keep going back to this mechanic shop and what keeps causing rattling noises is the VVT sprockets and possibly pinions I think they're called. But I am really not sure. If anybody would know what the possible causes would be of the tensioners to keep failing to be, would be very insightful. | 06 Honda CR-V Screw/Bolt Extraction | 18Relevance | 5 years ago | JDor88 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hey Guys, I have a 2006 Honda CR-V and there is a screw that had its head snapped off in the hole where the bolt to secure the number 2 spark plug should go. When you remove that stupid plastic Beauty cover that is over the spark plugs, there are two bolts that you cannot remove from the cover, I am referring to those. Anyways, I have tried to remove the snapped of bolt with a vampliers but the metal is too soft and it just slips and deforms it. My question is whether I can just use a drill and just drill it out. Or, do any of you have a better idea? ... | |||||
| 2015 Honda CRV Seepage or Spillage? | 19Relevance | 4 years ago | Kaizen | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| A friend went to the dealer (yes the dealer) with his 2015 Honda CRV, 100K miles. I’m trying to help him out on whether this is legit or not. They recommend a whole list of things, including changing out the valve cover gasket. They said the valve cover gasket was seeping. Below are photos. If you ask my non-professional DIY opinion, it looks like oil was spilled on top of the valve cover, not seeping from the valve cover gasket. The valve cover gasket area looks dirty, but not from seepage. But then again, there might be something I don’t know about this specific engine, where it is actually leaking. Thanks for your suggestions. | |||||

| covers on top of the motor are mostly there for aesthetics. If you watch Scotty often you'll notice has well known for throwing these covers on the lawn while calling it a stupid Beauty cover. My wrx has small cover on it and it looks better than the intake manifold & a bunch of wires. The heat they keep in is pretty insignificant all things considered. I mean your hood is most likely insulated anyway. After doing a google search, its seems theyre intended to reduce noise coming from the engine... not sure how noticeable that really is tbh. | Hi Scotty, I've found a 2012 Scion xD with about 105,000 miles on it at a Toyota dealership near me, currently listed at $8,890. Automatic transmission. I took the Beauty cover off the engine and found a bunch of plant debris under the cover. This set off alarm bells for me. How does this even happen and should I be concerned? The dealer also wouldn't let me take it to a mechanic for inspection, so that's not a good sign to me either. I test drove the car and didn't detect any mechanical issues. My BlueDriver scan tool didn't pick up any codes besides one ... | |||||
| What's this weird air box thing? | 18Relevance | 4 years ago | joshjaks | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I was looking under the hood of my 2013 Nissan Quest (joke unintended) and noticed a funky box at the front of the engine on top of the radiator. It's a factory part, and it connects directly to the air box that has the filter in it. I wanted to take the Beauty cover off, so I pulled it out. Noticed that it has vents on the side closest to the air box, and the other side looks like it should have vents as well. However, the far side is completely closed off. Wondered how important this part is because it seems to block a lot of airflow to the engine compart ... | |||||

| ... just takes longer. It's not like the RPMs rev high but I'm not moving... the RPMs are at the appropriate level for the speed and gear ( maybe a slight lag but not much) it just takes longer to get there & shift. & when it shifts, it still feels smooth. The only time any shutter/stutter/slip occurs is when I'm on the highway/interstate & try to accelerate & ask the transmission to downshift. When it downshifts, it hesitates before slowly picking up speed & stays in limbo right as it reaches the appropriate RPMs & speed to shift into t ... | |||||

| Good choices.. just checking ti insure someone didn't use cheap stuff. Here's what I'd do, Take the Beauty cover off and leave it off (temp). When ticking happens again, pop hood and try to localize tick to which bank and position on head/valve cover....assuming it's vanos or lifter.... could be somewhere totally different. though too (DISA makes noises too but affects running...at least the ones I've had fail do). And sry but the BMW's are pretty complex and takes some extra effort sometimes. | |||||
| Answer to: Should you drive with engine cover on or off debate | 18Relevance | 2 years ago | AutoDIY | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Removing the cover on the Grand Cherokee does not pose any issues that I was able to find. However, every car should be researched before removing the cover. I believe the new Toyota 4-cylinder Turbo engines use the engine cover to direct air to flow over the turbocharger that is located in the back of the engine. | |||||
| Answer to: Leaking valve cover gasket 2022 Civic | 18Relevance | 2 years ago | Justin Shepherd | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| It's not "normal seepage", otherwise, they wouldn't put valve cover gaskets in cars. Valve cover gaskets aren't designed to leak or weep at all. I would call Honda corporate. | |||||

| ... I checked the oil level and it is okay (has not reached the mileage to be changed but is about 5 months old). I did see some oil below the Beauty cover near where the valve cover meets the head? The coolant expansion tank is below the low-level line and was after the engine was warmed up yesterday. However, the radiator was full of coolant. Could this be a sign of what is wrong with my engine? Should I add coolant to the expansion tank? I am assuming my mechanic will perform a block leak and compression test of the engine. I would do this but do not have ... | |||||
| 2001 Tacoma 2.4l oil pressure light after oil pump cover replacement | 18Relevance | 6 months ago | planner | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hi Scotty and everyone. I had a harmonic balancer issue with my 01 Tacoma 2.4l. it was wiggling. So I called a mobile mechanic thinking I should not drive it like that. He puts a long bolt to tighten the crankshaft bolt and breaks the oil pump cover when he starts the car. He then ran away. I could not get him to pick my phone up. I ordered all OEM parts from the local Toyota dealership and replaced the oil pump cover and put a new gasket, used the 3m weather strip adhesive waited 20 mins and put the cover back on. Then put the harmonic balancer and crankshaft bolt on torqued it to spec using an old belt trick, and put all the belts on. I started the car works fine but I have the oil light on and belts squeak. I am going to tighten the belts but oil light got me scared. I don't see any leaks, I am wondering if the oil pump lost its prime or what to do. Please advise any expert opinion helps. Thank you all for reading through it. | |||||
| Cracked Valve Cover or Production Error? | 18Relevance | 11 months ago | Zb44319 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hey everyone! I have a 2015 Lexus RX350, 3.5L (2GR-FE), 172,000 miles. I do oil changes every 3,000 miles since it hit 150,000, before that was doing them every 5,000 miles. Just noticed what could be a crack on the top of the valve cover, just above the timing chain. Haven’t pulled the cover off to verify that it actually even is a crack. It doesn’t leak oil from this location, but I wanted to come check here before I decided to pull it off just in case it could be a manufacturing imperfection. I’m moving from CA to OK in the next few weeks, and wanted to make sure this car is ready, since I’ll also be pulling a small 5x8 utility trailer behind it. I’ve done this drive before (my spouse and I are dual-military and I’m getting out of the service), so I know what to expect. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. If I need to pull the cover to verify then come back I absolutely will. Thanks! | |||||
| Timing cover reseal | 18Relevance | 3 years ago | grattiangulo | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I recently took my 2007 Toyota Matrix, 100k miles, automatic into the dealership to give it a good checkup since I just hit 100k miles. While there, they told me my timing cover needed to be resealed due to it leaking oil. While they did point out a very minor pool of oil below the engine, they agreed this was not an immediate problem for me and it might be another 1-3 years before this becomes serious. Nonetheless, they quoted me ~$3k if I wanted to fix it. Needless to say, I decided to forgo the service. To date, oil does not appear to excessively leak from the engine (the car is parked in my garage and I’ve never seen any oil on the garage floor) and the car runs just fine. Do you think it’s worth having the timing cover resealed at some point? Would you recommend any products like BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak that seal leaks (vs having the timing cover resealed)? | |||||
| Leaking timing chain cover | 18Relevance | 4 years ago | daveEquinox | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hey, Scotty. Got a 2005 Chevy Equinox with 212K miles. It is leaking coolant. I had my mechanic pressure test it and he said it's either the water pump or the timing chain cover. I replaced the water pump and it was leaking but there is still a small coolant leak coming from the area near the crankshaft pulley. I'm assuming it must be the timing chain cover. How can a timing chain cover leak coolant? Thought it was just motor oil. | |||||
